The following email came in response to the query sent to the IFAA asking if Sighting Aids are legal equipment in the non-sighted category.
Dear Officers. Delegates, Head Coaches.
On behalf of the IFAA Executive Committee, I wish to share a review decision issued by the IFAA Technical Committee. Please ensure that this is well distributed within your organisation for the benefit of your members and those facilitating and/or officiating archery events.
In response to recent inquiries regarding the use of aids, held at arm’s length, to determine the aiming point in non-sighted divisions—such as rulers (either purchased or self-made), bow squares, or the archer’s finger, whether marked or unmarked, — the IFAA Technical Committee has conducted a thorough review and discussion. The Committee found no provision in the Book of Rules (2021–2022, Rev. 4 April 2021) that is being violated by such practices. Therefore, we conclude that the use of these aids is not considered illegal.
Attached are several examples of sighting aids submitted to the IFAA as part of the recent inquiries. These are provided for reference only and do not represent an exhaustive list.
Yours in Archery,
Lynn Ellingworth
Secretary
International Field Archery Association
